The best story I have read was The Empty House, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The main character, Sherlock Holmes, is a brilliant detective whose ideas, methods, and energy have amazed the world. But Holmes's intelligence is not the only reason I like the story. I like him for his lifestyle. He is a very passionate person. He does not just obsess over the necessities of daily life, but also thinks about higher things. In this particular story, he has returned from a near-death experience, when everyone in the world believed him dead for years. He has traveled the world and seen many things. He has his own philosophy, and he follows it even though he must give up some other pleasures. Now, upon his return, he is a fuller and more mature character than ever before. I do not idolize Mr. Holmes, but I admire his courage and his single-minded pursuit of his dreams, as well as the wisdom that he radiates.
